Foreclosure filings drop 29% in Providence area

PROVIDENCE – Foreclosure filings in the Providence–New Bedford–Fall River area declined 29 percent in April compared with the same period in 2011, RealtyTrac said Thursday.

There were 697 total foreclosures in the area – including default notices, auctions and bank repossessions – according to the California-based real estate data firm, down from 986 filings in April 2011.

This is the third straight month that year-over-year foreclosure filings dropped in the Providence area, which includes Bristol County, Mass. and all of Rhode Island except Newport County.

The foreclosure totals show a continuing split between Rhode Island, where filings have dropped since the start of the year, and Massachusetts, where they have been rising during that time.
