Former Projo publisher Sutton named executive in residence at JWU

PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University Chancellor John J. Bowen said that former Providence Journal Publisher, President and CEO Howard Sutton has been appointed as executive in residence in resource development.

The appointment was effective Jan 1.

Sutton, the principal adviser for The Providence Journal Charitable Legacy Fund, will help guide the university in its efforts to develop best practices related to fundraising, Bowen said in a memo to university faculty and staff.

Sutton served as the publisher, president and CEO of The Providence Journal Co., before stepping down last year. He also served as chairman of the Providence Journal board of directors from 2000 through 2008. Joining the company in 1973, he served in numerous management positions and was promoted to president and assistant publisher in 1998.

In the memo, Bowen wrote that Sutton is “recognized as a community leader” and has received humanitarian and volunteer awards from a number of charitable organizations including The American Heart Association, the Volunteer Center, Leadership Rhode Island, National Jewish Hospital, Phoenix House, the March of Dimes, United Way of Rhode Island, City Year Rhode Island, Rhode Island for Community and Justice, and Boys Town.

Sutton also has chaired the boards of Crossroads Rhode Island, Christmas in April, the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the United Way of Rhode Island; currently, he serves on the board of The Academic Decathlon and as a trustee for Salve Regina University.
