Foundation grant to help Day One

PROVIDENCE – Day One, an organization dedicated to dealing with sexual assault as a community concern, has received a $50,000 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation to combat child sex trafficking.
The nonprofit will work through a statewide task force formed late last year to develop new procedures, a statewide training plan and a mentoring program.
“We have a strong task force behind the effort to effectively respond to sex trafficking in Rhode Island and identify children who are at risk,” says Peg Langhammer, executive director of Day One. “This grant will build capacity and help us move this work forward.”
Day One plans to increase statewide awareness of the commercial sexual exploitation of children by targeting community-based organizations and social service providers who work with potential victims, and by educating the general public. The nonprofit will also develop a screening tool for children at risk and advocate to modify existing laws and policies as well as create new legislation to combat child sex trafficking.
“Trafficking has horrible consequences for the health, well-being and future of its victims,” said Neil Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO. “Taking on exploitation will produce a lifetime of benefits to the children, their families and society as a whole.”
