PROVIDENCE – The newly established Rhode Island Design Hall of Fame will induct four individuals at a “Hall of Fame party” on Thursday.
They are: Architect Stephen Durkee, industrial designer Martin Keen, industrial designer Aidan Petrie and the late urban designer/architect William D. Warner; they represent the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class, according to DESIGNxRI.
The event will be held at Rooftop at Providence G at 100 Dorrance St. from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
The Rhode Island Design Hall of Fame has been established to recognize lifetime achievements of Rhode Island-based designers who have made significant contributions through their design practice to the design industry, other industry sectors, or the community or world at large.
This is one of the events being held as part of Design Week RI: a Sept. 17-27 celebration of the design industry in its many incarnations – graphics, industrial, architectural, landscape, Web design and more.
Centralized in the capital with events throughout the state, Design Week RI includes a reception on Monday and a “4×4 Speaker Series” showcasing local design talent Monday through Thursday at Aurora Providence on Westminster Street.
An independent jury selected the four inductees for 2014, based on their demonstration of superior design quality, leadership and impact.
The jury included: Mickey Ackerman of Business Innovation Factory, Kipp Bradford of KippWorks, Brian Gross of Nail, Kaki Martin of Klopfer Martin and Christine West of KITE Architect. Other factors significant in the selection of inductees were their civic and volunteer contributions, as well as mentorship to the next generation of design leaders in Rhode Island.
“We were thrilled at the overall quality of the applications,” Emily Hall, DESIGNxRI board member and Hall of Fame committee member, said in a press release. “Each inductee possesses a unique combination of these qualities. We look forward to sharing the jury’s comments at the Hall of Fame Awards ceremony.”
The Rhode Island Design Hall of Fame is presented by DESIGNxRI, an organization working to maximize the assets of the Rhode Island design community.
Tickets to the RI Design Hall of Fame awards party are $50 in advance or $60 at the door. Proceeds go to support the ongoing work of DESIGNxRI. More information can be found at designweekri.com.
