Before opening franchise:

Leslie owned a handbag store called In the Bag – a Providence boutique on Elmgrove Avenue, prior to opening Pure Barre with her daughter Jaime.

Reason for opening:

After the luxury markets crashed, Leslie took a barre class in New York’s upper west side and fell in love with it. It was so challenging and different, and the teachers were great. Leslie thought, “Wow we need to take this to Rhode Island.” n

“We offer a musically driven, barre-based workout. It’s small, asymmetric movements that work your muscles until they’re shaking, followed by an exercise to stretch them out. The hourlong class is a full-body workout that follows the same format every time – but no two classes are exactly alike.”

“To become a teacher, you first have to take 100 classes. All our teachers then go to Colorado or South Carolina for a weeklong master-teacher training session to learn the technique, how to teach, anatomy, how to modify, and more. Then, Jaime works with the teachers-in-training for a month before we film them teaching a full class. Corporate then goes over the video, and if they don’t pass, they start over.

“It’s awesome to be in R.I. and have people thanking you for bringing Pure Barre here.”

“Pure Barre is like having a personal trainer – your body changes in 10 classes. Our motto is LTB: lift, tone, burn. Pure Barre is a nonjudgement zone, and this is a very welcoming community of people of all ages. You do not need a background in dance, you just have to be able to hold onto a bar.”

“If you are traveling, there are Pure Barres everywhere. Because Pure Barre is in Los Angeles, celebrities [such as] Jenny Slate recognize the brand and work out at our R.I. studio. They know that when they come in, they’ll get an amazing workout in the same structured method they understand.”
