Before opening franchise:

I’m a serial entrepreneur – this is my third business. I started several regional arts and entertainment monthlies at colleges and in college towns, and later founded the advertising service business MJS Communications, with a focus on college-student marketing, Hispanic, African American and military campaigns.

Reason for opening:

I was looking for a business that could be insulated and protected from the internet. I wanted business-to-business, not business-to-consumer. I wanted a service business, not a product. I wanted a business where, through one point of contact, we provide many services. That’s what I found in City Wide: it’s a one-stop shop for numerous services. n

“City Wide Maintenance is a facilities-management company that partners with small local businesses to maintain your building. Our customers are building owners and property managers exclusively in office buildings and industrial buildings. The benefit to the service provider is that we help them grow. They have their own clients as well, but City Wide allows them an opportunity to grow by working for our clients.”

“A building owner needs to provide a number of services to maintain the building. Instead of making 10 different calls to 10 different vendors, they call us and we manage that.”

“If you have issues with any of your current property-management vendors, we take the issue off your plate. We manage all of the vendors, and you become our client. If you aren’t happy with any of the companies we bring in, we’ll swap them out. We represent you, the client, by handling the management of all these moving parts to maintain your building and keep tenants happy.”

“The beauty of this model is that one of my employees essentially becomes part of the staff at each of these buildings – but not part of payroll. Facility-service managers meet with business owners quite frequently to have a conversation to ensure that they are satisfied.”
