Free dental clinic to serve 900

The Rhode Island Oral Health Foundation expects to provide free dental services to at least 900 uninsured or underinsured people during a public dental health clinic to be held June 1 and 2.
The second annual Mission of Mercy event will take place at the Dental Hygiene Clinic at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. Doors will open at 6 a.m. and remain open until the clinic reaches capacity.
Organizers of last year’s clinic had expected to treat 500 patients, but ended up helping 800 and providing more than $293,000 in free care. The team of 650 health care professionals and volunteers provided 330 fillings, 450 extractions, 220 cleanings, 30 root canals and 45 removable partial dentures.
“The high rate of attendance at last year’s inaugural event far exceeded our expectations, highlighting both the importance of and the need for access to preventive dental treatment and services in our state,” said Lt. Governor Elizabeth H. Roberts, chairwoman of the R.I. Healthcare Reform Commission and co-chairwoman of the R.I. Oral Health Commission.
