Frontrunner in employee wellness

The fact that employee health and wellness efforts are worth the investment is not news to Toray Plastics (America) Inc. The Japanese manufacturer, with 600 regional employees, has had such programs for 15 years now, and constructed a separate building – an education and wellness center – to house the efforts.

“It’s a living, breathing, growing process,” said Lisa Ahart, who helps lead Toray’s U.S. human resources and health and safety efforts, of the program’s constant improvements. Providence workplace wellness firm Pro Health staffs Toray five days a week, providing personal training in the gym and other services.

One way Toray promotes healthy lifestyles, said Ahart, is by rolling a wellness theme into ongoing events. For instance, last year, a wellness fair was part of a regular Family Movie Night at Toray. “We had chair massages, healthy food, mini-classes on how to cook healthy,” Ahart said, as well as car-seat safety checks and fire-safety tips by North Kingstown police and fire. “It’s important to incorporate health and wellness into everyday life,” she said. n
