WARWICK – Held on the first day of 2017, the sixth annual Frozen Clam Dip and “Obstaplunge,” hosted by Laid-back Fitness, helped raise $10,000 in support of the R.I. Mentoring Partnership.

“Every year we feel energized not only by the enthusiasm of our plungers, but also by the awareness we’re able to raise for the local youth,” said Ryan McGowan, founder and owner of Laid-back Fitness.

Jo-Ann Schofield, president and CEO of the R.I. Mentoring Partnership, said she couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the national mentoring month.

“Nearly 900 kids are on the waiting list for mentors this year, and both the awareness and funds we’ve raised will bring us closer to our goal of providing the local youth with positive life influences,” she added.

This year, participants had a choice of four obstacle options constructed on the beach at Goddard Memorial State Park. The Frozen Clam track was a traditional direct plunge into Narragansett Bay, but the half-mile Obstaplunge and mile-long “Ultra” delayed the inevitable icy dip with an obstacle course. New this year, the “Nobstaplunge” allowed those participants who preferred to stay dry throughout the event an option to be involved as well.

Since its inception in 2012, the annual event has raised more than $35,000 for the R.I. Mentoring Partnership.
