Nearly 150 people charged into the frigid waters of Narragansett Bay on New Year’s Day, raising more than $7,500 for the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership.
The fourth annual Frozen Clam Dip was organized by RIMP and Laid-Back Fitness. The owner of the Warwick-based gym, Ryan McGowan, is both a mentor and supporter of RIMP. The plunge took place at Goddard Park State Beach.
Laid-Back Fitness also sponsored a heated tent to warm up the team that rounded up the most participants.
Funds will be used toward pairing youth with mentors through programs offered around the state.
Once a week, mentors meet with their mentee to engage in a casual activity. Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 52 percent less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, according to a Public/Private Ventures study by Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Many times, the pairing results in a lasting companionship. The program is offered to students from elementary to high school, as well as for adults seeking a second chance. •
