GTECH gives to PCL fundraiser

PROVIDENCE – GTECH Corp. donated $10,000 to the Providence Community Library’s “Books to Bank On” April 1 fundraiser, which raised a total of $40,000.
Held at Knight Memorial Library to raise money for the purchase children’s books, the fundraiser serves patrons of PCL’s nine neighborhood libraries.
“The availability of hard cover books at PCL is important because the families we serve do not use their discretionary spending to purchase books,” said PCL Program Coordinator Michelle Novello.
“Many of our children do not even have books in their homes, so coming to PCL’s nine branches during the summer is critical.”
Many of the families in these neighborhoods have limited or no access to books, computers, and Wi-Fi. In addition, more than 24,000 Providence public school students rely on the resources available at these libraries to for summer reading and to develop reading skills.
“For PCL to have books available for these children is critical, and to have an organization such as GTECH recognize this need and act upon it will go a long way toward helping Providence students thrive and succeed at school,” Novello added.
GTECH and PCL have been in partnership since 2009. Since then, GTECH has provided computer technology and resources for PCL’s administration, as well as children’s computer labs at eight of the nine library branches, through GTECH’s After School Advantage program.
“A child’s learning and development should not be compromised by his or her inability to access required books,” said Robert K. Vincent, GTECH’s senior vice president of human resources and public affairs. “Making this investment in the “Books to Bank On” event so that PCL can purchase required summer reading material is making an investment in our children’s future.”
