Gas prices add 2 cents in both R.I., Mass. in last week

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices maintained their consistent rise over the last week in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the fourth consecutive week of higher prices in both states, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.52 in Rhode Island in the Dec. 16 survey, 2 cents more than the price a week ago. Similarly, the price in Massachusetts rose 2 cents per gallon to $3.44.

Ocean State consumers now face gas prices that are on average 28 cents more per gallon than those across the nation, thanks to an 11 cent per gallon rise over the last four weeks. A year ago, the same gas cost the same amount in Rhode Island.

Massachusetts drivers have seen a four-week rise in the price of self-serve, unleaded regular gas of 15 cents per gallon, putting the local price 20 cents greater than the national average. A year ago, Bay State residents were paying an average of $3.44 for gas.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.44 to $3.66 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.74 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.87 for premium unleaded to $3.95 for diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.34 to $3.60 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.63 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.76 per gallon and diesel posted an average price of $3.97 per gallon.
