Gas prices climb in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts are higher than last week, AAA Northeast said Tuesday.

In Rhode Island, self-serve, regular gasoline is averaging $2.32 per gallon, which is 3 cents higher than last week but 4 cents below the national average. A year ago at this time, the Ocean State’s average price was $2.02. The average price in 2016 was $2.14 in Rhode Island.

Prices for unleaded regular in Rhode Island range from $2.23 to $2.43, with midgrade unleaded at $2.58; premium unleaded at $2.76; and diesel, $2.62.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular gasoline is averaging $2.28 per gallon, which is 5 cents higher than last week but 8 cents below the national average. A year ago at this time, the Bay State’s average price was $1.97, and its average price last year was $2.07.
Massachusetts prices for unleaded regular range from $2.15 to $2.49, with midgrade unleaded at $2.47; premium unleaded at $2.65; and diesel, $2.57.

“The national average has moved higher for 34 of the last 35 days, largely due to market reaction to OPEC’s plan to cut crude oil production,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “In 2017, traders and analysts will continue to monitor whether participating countries adhere to the OPEC agreement and the rate at which U.S. gasoline production increases.”
