Gas prices down a nickel in R.I., Mass., still above U.S. average

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices dropped a nickel in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this week but remained higher than the national average, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.65 in Rhode Island in the Sept. 23 survey, 5 cents less than the price a week ago.

In Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular gas this week was $3.54 per gallon, a decline of 5 cents per gallon over last week.

Rhode Island’s average price of $3.65 comes in 8 cents lower than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, local gas prices are 9 cents lower than last month’s.

A year ago, the same gas cost 31 cents more in Rhode Island at $3.95 per gallon and 30 cents more in Massachusetts at $3.83 per gallon.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.42 to $3.86 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.89 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.99 for both premium unleaded and diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.42 to $3.76 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.76 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.89 per gallon and diesel held at last week’s average of $3.96 per gallon.

Prices in both states remain above this week’s national average of $3.47 for a gallon of unleaded regular.
