PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices continued their downward trend in Massachusetts over the last week, with Rhode Island joining the trend a week after seeing no change in its prices, according to AAA Northeast.
The price for self-serve, regular gas on Tuesday averaged $2.27 per gallon in the Ocean State – equal to the national average – a drop of 3 cents from last week. “Prices have actually gone down since Memorial Day, reversing the traditional pattern of higher summertime prices,” said Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs. “Last year, the prices jumped 10 cents between the two holidays. Strong supplies and lower prices are contributing to record numbers of Americans traveling this summer.”
Regular unleaded gas ranged from $2.15 to $2.36 per gallon in Rhode Island, while averaging $2.47 for midgrade unleaded, $2.62 for premium unleaded and $2.38 for diesel. A year ago, the price for a gallon of unleaded regular fuel stood at $2.79.
Gas prices in Massachusetts fell 4 cents over the week to $2.21 per gallon. Other grades of fuel were: $2.45 for midgrade unleaded, $2.61 for premium unleaded and $2.41 for diesel.
