PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices continue to drop in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, falling another 2 cents from last week, according to AAA Southern New England’s weekly survey.
In Rhode Island, prices have fallen each week since early September, a total of 58 cents per gallon over 13 weeks.
In Massachusetts, prices have fallen 60 cents over the same time period.

In Rhode Island, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.94 per gallon, 2 cents less than last week and 17 cents below last month’s level. The current price remains 16 cents more than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.78, however. A year ago, the Ocean State’s average price was 55 cents higher at $3.49.
“Last week’s decision by OPEC ministers to maintain current levels of oil production resulted in a quick drop in oil prices, which is just now being reflected at the gas pumps,” Lloyd P. Albert, senior vice president of public affairs at AAA Southern New England, said in a statement. “AAA is estimating that lower gas prices nationally are helping consumers save $250 million per day in fuel costs compared to when prices peaked last summer, thereby freeing up significant dollars that families can use for other expenses during this busy time of the year.”
Prices for unleaded regular range from $2.82 to $3.02. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.21 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.35 for premium unleaded and $3.52 for diesel.
In Massachusetts, the average price of regular, unleaded gasoline is $2.86 per gallon, 2 cents lower than last week and 19 cents lower than a month ago. The price is 8 cents higher than the national average. A year ago, Massachusetts’ average price was 53 cents higher at $3.39.
Prices for self-serve, unleaded regular gas in Massachusetts range from $2.71 to $3.39. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.13 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.26 for premium unleaded and $3.50 for diesel.

AAA offered the following fuel saving tip: “Avoid quick starts and sudden stops. This wastes fuel, is harder on vehicle components and increases the odds of a traffic crash.”
