PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices rose 4 cents in Rhode Island, and 2 cents in Massachusetts, AAA Northeast said Tuesday.
AAA’s Dec. 27 survey of prices in the states found self-serve regular gas averaging $2.29 in Rhode Island and $2.23 in Massachusetts.

A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 27 cents lower at $2.02, and Massachusetts’ price was 24 cents lower at $1.99.
Rhode Island’s price also is 1 cent below the national average, while Massachusetts’ price is 7 cents less.
“Last month, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, along with non-cartel countries, worked out an agreement to limit crude oil production by 1.8 million barrels per day beginning in January,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “Efforts to curb oil production are aimed at re-balancing the oil supply and as a result, markets have reacted, causing retail prices to increase.”

In Rhode Island, unleaded regular gas prices range from $2.15 to $2.39, with midgrade unleaded at $2.53; premium unleaded at $2.73; and diesel, $2.56.
In Massachusetts, unleaded regular gas prices range from $2.11 to $2.39, with midgrade unleaded at $2.47; premium unleaded at $2.64; and diesel, $2.51.
