Gas prices jump again in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices increased in Rhode Island and Massachusetts for the third week in a row.
According to AAA Northeast’s weekly survey, the price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline rose 5 cents from last week in Rhode Island, and 4 cents in Massachusetts.
In Rhode Island, the average cost of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is $2.30 per gallon, an increase of a nickel from last week. Locally, prices are 19 cents higher than a month ago, but a penny less than the national average. A year ago at this time, the Ocean State’s average gasoline price was $3.53, $1.23 higher.
Prices in Rhode Island range from $2.12 to $2.43. Prices for different grades of gasoline are: $2.51 for midgrade unleaded; $2.71 for premium unleaded and $2.98 for diesel.
In Massachusetts, the average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is $2.26 per gallon, an increase of 4 cents from last week. The price in the Bay State is 5 cents lower than the national average, but 17 cents higher than a month ago. A year ago, the average price was $1.21 more, at $3.47. Prices range from $1.90 to $2.35. Different grades of gasoline in Massachusetts are: $2.44 for midgrade unleaded; $2.58 for premium unleaded and $2.90 for diesel.
AAA warned consumers to avoid quick starts and sudden stops, as it wastes fuel, is harder on vehicle components and increases odds of traffic crashes.
