Gas prices jump in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline jumped 11 cents from last week in Rhode Island, the first increase in six weeks, according to AAA Northeast.

Prices also rose 12 cents in Massachusetts, AAA Northeast said.
AAA Northeast said that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.48 per gallon in the Ocean State, 11 cents higher than last week. Prices locally are 7 cents higher than last month, and a cent more than the national average for the same grade of gasoline at $2.47.
A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was $1.17 higher at $3.65.
“Increases in the price of crude oil over the past week have driven this latest increase at the pump,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “We also saw increases at this time last year, with the switch over to summer blends of gasoline and the added cost of refining those blends.”
Prices ranged from $2.35 to $2.69 per gallon. Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.68 for midgrade unleaded, $2.82 for premium unleaded and $3 for diesel.
In Massachusetts, the average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is $2.47 per gallon, 12 cents higher than last week and 14 cents higher than last month. The price matches the national average. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $3.60.
Prices range from $2.24 to $2.56. Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.63 for midgrade unleaded; $2.79 for premium unleaded and $3.03 for diesel.

AAA offered the following tip: Spark plugs must be in good condition. Some will last for 100,000 miles, but may need to be replaced more often.
