Gas prices rise 2 cents per gallon in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Both Rhode Island and Massachusetts drivers saw gasoline prices rise 2 cents this week, the third consecutive week of increases after a nine-week decline, AAA Southern New England reported Tuesday.
The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.60 per gallon in Rhode Island – 2 cents higher than last week and up 9 cents over the course of the month, according to the trade group’s weekly survey of the area’s pump prices.
Despite the increase, Rhode Island’s price is currently 3 cents less than the $3.63 national average for a gallon of self-pump, regular unleaded.
AAA recommended drivers shop around for the best deal, as prices ranged 34 cents from $3.46 to $3.80 for a gallon of unleaded regular in Rhode Island.
This week, pump prices varied from $3.84 per gallon for midgrade to $3.97 for premium unleaded and $3.90 for diesel.
A year ago, gas in the Ocean State cost 16 cents more, at an average $3.76 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
The pump price in Massachusetts also rose 2 cents this week to $3.52 per gallon, 11 cents below the national average, according to AAA. Massachusetts’ gas prices are up 9 cents over the past month.
Bay State gas prices ranged from $3.73 per gallon for midgrade unleaded to $3.86 for premium and $3.93 for diesel.
A year ago, the Massachusetts average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.62.
The average nationwide cost for self-serve, regular gasoline fell 2 cents this week to $3.63 a gallon, according to the AAA website. Pump prices reached their highest recorded average price on July 17, 2008, at $4.11 per gallon.
