Gas prices rise in R.I., fall in Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gas prices rose by a cent in Rhode Island, and fell by a cent in Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast’s weekly survey of gasoline prices.
Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.66 per gallon, which is a penny more than last week in Rhode Island, and represents the fifth week of price increases. Locally, prices are 18 cents higher than last month, and 6 cents less than the national average for regular unleaded at $2.72. A year ago, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.70.
Prices range from $2.49 to $2.89. Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.87, midgrade unleaded; $3.01, premium unleaded; and $3.01, diesel.
In Massachusetts, gasoline prices dropped a penny to $2.64 per gallon for self-serve, regular unleaded, the first decrease in two months, AAA Northeast said. Prices are 17 cents higher than a month ago, but 8 cents less than the national average. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $3.66.
Prices in Massachusetts range from $2.45 to $2.85. Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.84, midgrade unleaded; $2.96, premium unleaded; and $3.03, diesel.
This week’s fuel-saving tip from AAA is: Accelerate smoothly and brake gradually. It’s safer, uses less gas and reduces brake wear.
