Gas prices rise in R.I., unchanged in Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gas prices rose 4 cents from last week in Rhode Island, but remained the same in Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast.

AAA’s latest survey of prices found that self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.74 in Rhode Island. Prices are 9 cents higher than a month ago, but 2 cents less than the national average. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 95 cents higher at $3.69.

Prices collected by the survey range from $2.62 to $2.89. Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.94, for midgrade unleaded; $3.08 for premium unleaded; and $2.99 for diesel.

In Massachusetts, the price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline remains $2.67 per gallon, 2 cents higher than a month ago, but 9 cents less than the national average. A year ago, Massachusetts gas prices for regular unleaded were 98 cents higher, at $3.65.
Massachusetts prices range from $2.86 for midgrade unleaded and $2.98 for premium unleaded to $3.02 for diesel.

AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip of the week: “If you think you will be stopped for more than a minute or two, shut off the car. Today’s cars use far less fuel to restart the engine than letting the car idle.”
