PROVIDENCE received the most votes to be named the best "up and coming city" by GayCities.

PROVIDENCE – Providence was named the most “up and coming city” in the annual “Best of GayCities” challenge, putting it on the “national radar,” according to the travel site.

Rhode Island’s capital city beat out contenders such as Salt Lake City, Milwaukee and Albany, N.Y., for the designation by GayCities, which covers 224 cities worldwide.

The website stated that three Providence schools, Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and Johnson & Wales University, “pull in a high percentage of open-minded, artistic and openly gay folks, creating a friendly, diverse and tolerant community.”

GayCities announced its winners this week; London received the most votes by GayCities readers in the “city of the year” category, beating Paris by 20 votes.

San Francisco and New York City were awarded for “singles scene” and “showstopping entertainment,” respectively. New York City also was recognized as as the “best drag city.”

“It’s great to see so many people using the GayCities platform to share their favorite cities,” Scott Gatz, CEO of Q.Digital, which owns and operates GayCities, said in a statement. “Readers are helping each other find the best experiences where they live and travel.”
Key West took the spot for “budget honeymoon,” while Berlin led for “public art hub” and Seattle for “most festive pride.”
Approximately 20,000 votes were cast in 13 categories. Nominees were selected by GayCities editors based on reviews and check-ins this year by GayCities members across the globe. Each winning city will receive a special virtual badge on the home page of its GayCities guide.
