Gemma foundation grants $40K to screening program

Posted 3/23/12

PAWTUCKET – In a continuing effort to increase cancer screening in Rhode Island, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation has made a $40,000 grant to the R.I. Department of Health’s Women’s Cancer Screening Program. The grant is expected to be used to expand access to mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women from 40 to 49 years old.

Rhode Island has seen improvements in breast and cervical cancer mortality rates in the most recent five-year period for which statistics are available, according to the foundation, putting Rhode Island below national mortality rates for both diseases.

Foundation Executive Director Maria Gemma said in a statement, “we feel a responsibility to not only refer women to this program but to do what we can to sustain it. … I am confident our ongoing collaboration will result in finding breast cancer at an early stage, resulting in fewer deaths from this disease.”
