Goldin, Carnevale honored by Mental Health Association

PROVIDENCE – Sen. Gayle Goldin and Rep. John M. Carnevale were recently presented the 2014 “Bell of Hope” award from the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island during a ceremony at the State House to launch the “May is Mental Health Month” campaign.

The award was presented to acknowledge Carnevale’s and Goldin’s efforts in the Rhode Island state legislature to improve the lives of Rhode Islanders in need of mental health services and for their efforts to address other issues that affect the quality of life of individuals with mental health issues.

According to MHARI Executive Director Susan Jacobsen, Goldin was selected for her work on behavioral health care integration legislation. Goldin is the sponsor of legislation recommended by a legislative report urging closer integration of behavioral health care and primary care. Carnevale was honored as a result of his championing of investments in mental health care in the state budget as well as his work with consumer and advocacy groups and as a police officer in helping to foster better understanding of the needs of people suffering with mental health issues.

Both Carnevale and SGoldin said they were grateful to be honored by an organization that works for such a worthy cause, and thanked the many advocates whose work makes improvements in mental health care possible.
