Golf associations merge

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Golf Association and the Rhode Island Women’s Golf Association are considering a merger in order to enhance services and to meet changing demands of present and potential members of both groups.
The merger would be effective Jan. 1, 2014, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the Rhode Island Women’s Golf Association, which was founded in 1914.
The Rhode Island Golf Association was founded in 1902. The organizations since have operated separately but on “parallel paths to ensure that Rhode Island golfers can compete at the highest levels both locally and nationally,” according to a release.
“Attracting new golfers and new members will be easier if there is one clear and consistent message,” said Bob Ward, executive director of the Rhode Island Golf Association. “Together, we can carry that message to everyone.”
No changes to the championships of either association are anticipated. The proposed merger must be approved by the boards of directors of both organizations.
