DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has tapped Michael Goodman, an expert on the Massachusetts economy, to lead the school’s Center for Policy Analysis.
An economic sociologist, Goodman will succeed Clyde W. Barrow as director effective July 1.
For the past five years, Goodman has served as associate professor and chairman of the UMass Dartmouth Department of Public Policy, where he directs face-to-face and online master of public policy programs. He co-edits MassBenchmarks, a journal focused on the Massachusetts economy and published by the UMass Donahue Institute in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
Goodman also leads the Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy. Supported by a $326,000 grant from MassDevelopment, the academy provides research, technical assistance, and educational services to regional leaders across the Commonwealth.
Before joining UMass Dartmouth, Goodman was director of economic and public policy research at the Donahue Institute.
UMass Dartmouth Provost Mohammad Karim welcomed Goodman, citing his credibility, expertise and experience.
“We see this as the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the center’s distinguished history and a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the connections of our social science and public policy faculty and students to valuable research and community service opportunities,” Karim said.
Goodman said he is committed to preserving the resourceful role of the UMass Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis that the agency has had in the community.
“I am honored and look forward to working with … staff to build upon the tradition of excellence that has characterized the work of the Center for Policy Analysis for the past 30 years,” he said.
Barrow, Goodman’s predecessor, announced last month that he would resign his professorship at UMass Dartmouth as of July 31, after accusing school administrators of isolating themselves from faculty members in an open letter of resignation he sent to the Boston Herald.
