PROVIDENCE – Grace Episcopal Church will undertake an expansion into a new parish hall within the next several weeks.
The addition will be a stand alone, one-story building adjoining the historic church downtown, but will also feature an interior connection to the church.
The architect is Centerbrook Architects, of Centerbrook, Conn., according to church leaders. The value of the project was not specified. Although the parish continues to raise funds, it is ready to begin the project, according to Chris Barker, the parish administrator.
A ceremonial groundbreaking was held last week.
The addition will be placed on the parking lot next to the church that it owns, consuming about half the lot. The building will be positioned between the Kinsley Building and the church, with a landscaped area fronting Westminster Street.
“It’s beautiful,” Barker said, of the design. “A one-story building with lots of windows and an airy feel.”
The hall will be available for public rental, for weddings and for community meetings, as well as parish needs, he said. The building also will include administrative space.
City approvals have been obtained. Construction should begin within two weeks, he said, and be completed within a year.
