WARWICK – The Grainger Foundation has donated $10,000 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in support of its mission to provide food to people in need and promote long-term solutions to hunger.
“This grant will be used to help us acquire healthy food for families during the summer, which is one of the most difficult times of year for those with school-aged children,” said Andrew Schiff, chief executive officer of the food bank. “Gifts like this help to keep food on the shelves at the 178 agencies around the state which rely on the food bank for food. We are grateful to The Grainger Foundation for its generosity.”
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank now serves more than 66,000 people each month through its network of member agencies. One in three served is a child under the age of 18. Currently, Rhode Island has the highest level of food insecurity in New England, with 15.5 percent of households facing difficulty in putting food on the table.
This donation was recommended by Jim Crowley, branch manager of W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s Warwick location. Grainger has been a part of the Greater Providence business community for more than 65 years as the leading broad line supplier of maintenance, repair and operating products.
“We are proud to support the efforts of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank” said Crowley. “We understand the need for food assistance right here in our community at a time when the need has never been higher.”
The Grainger Foundation, an independent, private foundation based in Lake Forest, Ill., was established in 1949 by William W. Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger, Inc.
The food bank is a nonprofit organization located in Providence, RI. In the past fiscal year, the food bank distributed 9.75 million pounds of food. For more information, visit www.rifoodbank.org.
