PROVIDENCE – A $246,385 grant from The Champlin Foundations will fund a new biochemistry lab at Rhode Island College.

“The biochemistry program at RIC is growing, and I credit our student-centered faculty and the aid of The Champlin Foundations as the catalysts that have sparked that enthusiasm,” RIC President Nancy Carriuolo said in a statement. “Enhancing our STEM programming and teaching facilities will allow us to graduate even more skilled professionals for this in-demand workforce industry.”

The money will be used to renovate an existing classroom in the Clarke Science Building into a complete teaching and research lab with a prep room, meeting area and office. The new lab will have a large workspace, a chemical hood, chemical storage and a fluorescent plate reader.

The lab will primarily be used for an intensive, six-hour-per-week laboratory research course covering biochemical techniques.

RIC’s biochemistry program was introduced in 2010 as a concentration within the Bachelor of Science in chemistry degree program.

RIC has previously used grants from The Champlin Foundations for construction of the R.I. STEM Center in the Henry Barnard School, and renovations to teaching and research labs in the Fogarty Life Science and Clarke Science buildings.
