Great Island Bridge replacement completed under budget, ahead of schedule

NARRAGANSETT – The replacement of the Great Island Bridge is complete, the R.I. Department of Transportation announced recently. The $11.2 million project was completed at $700,0000 under budget and almost eight months ahead of schedule.

The bridge is the major access to a residential community on Great Island, a part of Narragansett near Galilee.

The bridge was built in two phases to keep vehicular access open to the community.

The new bridge, which opened Nov. 1, includes three spans of concrete beams, with a cast-in-place concrete deck and sidewalks. It also has a metal pedestrian railing and decorative lighting.

The original structure, built in 1959, had a posted weight limit for almost 20 years and was structurally deficient.
