A healthy employee is a happy employee.
Not to mention productive.
That’s how they feel at Moran Shipping Agencies Inc.
“Moran ownership understands that fostering employee health and wellness is a vital component necessary for creating a successful business,” said Jason Kelly, executive vice president.
Though the company’s wellness program was created three years ago, it boasts a staggering amount of content. Moran works with its health provider, the community and the R.I. Department of Health to utilize any and all resources to promote a healthy work environment. This includes classes on nutrition, coping skills for stress, working with Farm Fresh Rhode Island to provide weekly vegetable deliveries, blood drives with the Rhode Island Blood Center, cancer awareness with a visit from the Gloria Gemma Bus, providing employees with pedometers and hosting walking contests.
The next few months will see even more: workers have a chiropractor coming in to teach about spine safety, a workshop on how to take charge of your own health, a class on sleep disorders and deprivation, a visit from a financial-wellness consultant and another blood drive.
As the company’s wellness program gains steam, the participation rates have increased.
“Our biggest tool in promoting a culture of health is our employees themselves,” said Kelly. “Their input into what concerns them about their health is a determining factor into what classes are scheduled and what services are offered.” •
