Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC 10 recently announced Groundwork Providence has been selected as their first 2013 Champion in Action.

Through the Champions in Action program, Groundwork Providence, formerly known as Keep Providence Beautiful, will receive a $35,000 unrestricted grant, media coverage and promotional and volunteer support from Citizens and NBC 10.

Groundwork Providence works locally, using techniques in new urbanism, to revitalize neighborhoods experiencing joblessness and lacking green space. It will use the grant to complete an outdoor eco-laboratory and teaching facility at its community garden and to create jobs through teaching and education programs.

“We are thrilled to be selected as a Champion in Action,” said Gary Cloutier, executive director of Groundwork Providence. “This award will help us continue our mission of changing lives, greening neighborhoods and cultivating pride and a sense of place for Rhode Islanders.”

Groundwork Providence received the award in the program’s strengthening-communities category. •
