HARI: Patient-safety program saves $18.7M in Rhode Island

CRANSTON – Rhode Island hospitals’ participation in a national patient-safety program during the past two years has saved more than $18.7 million by avoiding unnecessary treatments, according to the Hospital Association of Rhode Island.
Rhode Island is one of 33 states participating in the Hospital Engagement Network co-administered by the American Hospital Association and the Health Research and Educational Trust.
The Hospital Engagement Network has set a goal of reducing patient harm by 40 percent and reducing preventable readmissions by 20 percent. Three notable successes of the past two years have been: the state’s hospitals reduced early-elective deliveries (greater than 37 weeks and less than 39 weeks gestation) by 80 percent; surgical site infections dropped by 65 percent and pressure ulcers declined by 43 percent. •
