PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI has released enrollment data for the period ending Dec. 3, showing that 27,474 individuals have enrolled in 2017 coverage so far.
Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and ends Jan 31. This is the fourth open enrollment period for the exchange.
The majority of the individuals who have enrolled are 2016 HSRI enrollees that were auto-renewed into a 2017 plan, according to information from the exchange released this week. Of those individuals, 991 have selected a plan and are new to the exchange this year, or are returning after being enrolled with HSRI previously.
Another 2,022 of the 27,474 individuals have already paid their first month’s premium.
A total of 14,645 females are on the exchange, or 53 percent, compared with 12,829 men, or 47 percent. Fifty-one percent of those on the exchange are 45 years old and over, with those 55 and older comprising the largest percentage at 30 percent, and the 45-54 age group next at 21 percent.
Twenty-five percent of enrollees are not receiving any financial assistance, compared with 25 percent receiving an advanced premium tax credit and 50 percent receiving an advanced premium tax credit and cost sharing reduction to offset out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays and deductibles.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the most popular carrier with 51 percent of enrollments. Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island has 49 percent of enrollments. UnitedHealth Group Inc. announced earlier this year it would no longer offer plans on Rhode Island’s exchange.
Last year, 34,888 individuals enrolled in health insurance coverage through HealthSource RI by the close of its open enrollment period, a 16 percent increase.
As for SHOP enrollment, 2,460 small employer accounts have been created as of Dec. 3, and 986 applications have been completed. Small employers can enroll at their renewal date. Medicaid-eligible individuals also can enroll throughout the year.
HSRI has received 62,762 phone calls from the start of open enrollment to date, as well as 297,877 page views on its website, www.hsri.com.
