PROVIDENCE – More than 1,000 new enrollees have signed up for health insurance through HealthSource RI, the state’s health insurance exchange, since last week.

A total of 33,896 individuals have enrolled in 2016 coverage as of Dec. 26, representing those who have paid and those who have not. Nearly all of the individuals are current HSRI enrollees who were auto-renewed into a 2016 plan, the exchange said.

HSRI said 3,847 individuals have selected a plan for 2016 coverage, and are new to the exchange this year or returning after being enrolled at some point during a prior year.

Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 31. However, small employers may enroll at their renewal date, regardless of where that date falls during the calendar year. Medicaid-eligible individuals also may enroll throughout the year.

Since open enrollment began, HSRI has received 88,301 phone calls and 181,362 visits to its website at healthsourceri.com.
Tuesday, Dec. 29 is the last day that a person can sign up for coverage that begins Jan. 1, according to the agency’s website.
