BOSTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Wednesday more than $1.98 million in grants to Rhode Island Housing to renew support for the Sunrise Project and New Transitions programs, which assist low-income people living with HIV/AIDS and their families.
The funding, offered through HUD’s Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program, is part of $24 million in grants awarded nationally to 25 local programs.
“Simply put, housing is health care,” said HUD secretary Juliàn Castro. “We’re proud to continue working with our local partners to provide housing and care for low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Their hard work continues to provide opportunities for our fellow Americans to build productive and prosperous futures.”

Rhode Island Housing and Mortgage Finance Corp.’s Sunrise Project will receive a HOPWA grant of $1,240,606. The Sunrise Project, a collaboration with AIDS Care Ocean State and Community Care Alliance, will support 38 households annually. Rhode Island Housing’s New Transitions project will receive a HOPWA grant of $741,355 to continue its efforts to provide substance abuse treatment, intensive supportive services and life skills training to support 18 houses annually.
