PROVIDENCE – More than $3.5 million has been awarded to support 37 local homeless housing and service programs in Rhode Island, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said Tuesday.

“This funding is critical to local Rhode Island programs that are on the front lines of helping those who might otherwise be living on our streets,” Nancy Smith Greer, HUD Rhode Island field office director, said in a statement.

The Tier 1 Continuum of Care grants support the Obama administration’s efforts to end homelessness by providing housing and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness, HUD said.
