BOSTON – Rhode Island will receive $4.1 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development grants to renew support for 36 local homeless housing and service programs in the state, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan announced Tuesday.

Funded through HUD’s Continuum of Care Program, the grants will fund projects to improve or expand transitional housing programs; provide support for veterans, disabled persons and the elderly; increase street outreach and direct housing assistance for individuals and families; and improve Rhode Island’s homeless management information system.

“This funding is critical to local Rhode Island programs that are on the front lines of helping those who might otherwise be living on our streets,” said Barbara Fields, HUD’s regional administrator for New England.

HUD’s Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local projects and are a critical part of the “Opening Doors” initiative, the Obama administration’s federal strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness.

Projects in Rhode Island receiving Continuum of Care grants include the Amos House in Providence, which last month kicked off the public phase of a $6 million capital campaign to build a new, three-level community center, and Crossroads Rhode Island’s transitional housing programs.
