HUD grants $500K to Narragansetts for housing

Posted:

BOSTON – As part of $563 million set aside by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, Narragansett Indian Wetuomuck Housing has received a grant of $499,110 to support efforts to maintain and/or build affordable housing units at the tribe’s Charlestown home.

In announcing the Indian Housing Block Grant Program’s allocations to 539 tribes or their tribally designated housing entities across the United States, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said that “hardworking American families in tribal communities should be able to live in communities where they have a fair shot to reach their potential.

“The resources provided today will give these tribal communities the tools to maintain quality housing, prevent overcrowding, improve public safety and provide other basic building blocks of security and success,” he added.

The full range of activities that the grants can support include building affordable housing, support existing housing, provide housing services to individuals and families, and establish crime prevention and safety measures, according to a HUD release.

Other New England tribes receiving HUD funds include:

  • Mashantucket Pequot, Connecticut, $68,434

  • Aroostook Band of Micmacs, Maine, $506,546

  • Houlton Band of Maliseets, Maine, $380,232

  • Indian Township Passamaquoddy Housing Authority, Maine, $947,801

  • Penobscot Tribe, Maine, $937,990

  • Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribal Housing Authority, Massachusetts, $464,083

  • Mashpee Wampanoag Housing Program, Massachusetts, $600,494
