Hall leaving PPS for job with Florida museum

PROVIDENCE - The Providence Preservation Society Executive Director James Brayton Hall will be leaving PPS in March to serve as deputy director of the Norton Museum of Art, in Palm Beach, Fla.

The PPS board will appoint an interim director in the coming weeks and begin a search for a new executive director, Lucie Searle, president of the board of trustees, said on Thursday in a release.

“PPS is on a firm footing as we look forward to next chapter in the history of this important citywide organization” said Searle. “James’ leadership and the commitment of our board have re-energized the Preservation Society, which plays an integral role in the life of Providence.”

Hall became director in 2010. During his tenure, PPS became more visible, Searle said. Among the projects, the Society successfully advocated for stronger anti-demolition language in the new downtown zoning ordinance. It also worked with the College Hill Neighborhood Association to guide improvements to the design of the proposed building at 257 Thayer Street.

“It has been an honor and privilege to lead this nationally recognized organization,” said Hall. “Much of what is considered best practice in the field today was pioneered through the passion and creativity of preservationists here in Providence. That entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community is alive and well at PPS.”
