Hasbro Inc. and CVS Health Corp. each made the 2016 Best Corporate Citizens list by Corporate Responsibility magazine released this week.
Pawtucket-based Hasbro ranked third on the list, which recognizes companies for transparency and responsibility, while Woonsocket-based CVS ranked 29th.
Other companies with a local presence that made the 17th annual list include Amgen Inc., of Thousand Oaks, Calif., which has a production facility in West Greenwich (73rd); Eaton Corp. PLC (74th), CBRE Group Inc. (95th) and Verizon Communications Inc. (80th).
According to the magazine, companies in the Russell 1000 index were ranked according to seven categories, environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, corporate governance, financial performance and philanthropy and community support – 303 data points of disclosure and performance measures were documented.
Microsoft topped the list for the second year in a row. Intel Corp. was second.
Hasbro fell one spot from last year’s ranking.

Kathrin Belliveau, Hasbro’s senior vice president, global government, regulatory affairs and corporate social responsibility, said they are proud to consistently be recognized as a leading business in corporate social responsibility.
Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chairman, president and CEO, said, “People and our planet are at the core of our purpose to make the world a better place for children and their families. This is why we have made corporate social responsibility a business priority and have long been committed to doing the right thing for our employees, our consumers and the communities in which we serve.”
“This prestigious recognition reinforces what we at Hasbro know to be true, that it’s not just about what you do that matters – it’s also about how you do it,” he added.

Eileen Howard Boone, senior vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy for CVS Health, said the company is proud to again be in the top 30 of CR Magazine 100 Best Corporate Citizens list.

“Our continued strong performance reflects our commitment to corporate social responsibility and the dedication of our more than 240,000 colleagues. Their tireless efforts to deliver on our purpose of helping people on their path to better health has driven our performance across the list’s measured categories,” Boone said.
CVS was flagged with a “caution” in connection with a $48 million lawsuit settlement in September that accused the U.S. drugstore operator of fraudulently concealing a significant loss of revenue in its pharmacy benefits manager business, culminating in a plunge in its stock price. CR wrote that CVS Health reached an agreement to settle a securities class action lawsuit related to purchases of CVS Health Corp. stock in 2008 and 2009 as well as public disclosures made by the company at that time concerning the PBM business.
