Hasbro and Kellogg settle lawsuit

Hasbro Inc., maker of G.I. Joe, Lincoln Logs and Mr. Potato Head, has settled a trademark dispute
with Kellogg Co. over the cereal maker’s use of the name
“Memory” to promote the Walt Disney Co. movie “Finding Nemo.”

Financial terms weren’t disclosed. Battle Creek, Michigan-
based Kellogg will pay Hasbro to use the Memory trademark for a
children’s game on boxes of Frosted Flakes and other cereals.

“We have settled our differences on a friendly basis,”
Hasbro Chief Executive Officer Alfred J. Verrecchia said in a
joint statement by both companies.

Kellogg, the second largest U.S. cereal maker, put pictures
of characters from “Finding Nemo” on the back of cereal boxes
and directs children to cut them out and lie them face down to
find ones that match. Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based Hasbro filed
suit last month in New York, claiming the game infringed the
trademark on its Memory card game that has been sold by Hasbro’s
Milton Bradley unit since 1966. Hasbro also has plans to release a “Finding Nemo” edition of the game.
