PAWTUCKET – As part of Hasbro Inc.’s corporate responsibility strategy, one of its Massachusetts-based facilities has been “green” printing re-certified for a third consecutive year.

The Hasbro-owned manufacturing plant, located in East Longmeadow on Shaker Road, is one of just two industrial facilities in the United States to receive the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership certification for in-plant printing operations. It is also one of just 48 domestic plants specializing in various printing operations to hold the SGP label various printing categories.

In addition to maintaining sustainable production practices in binding, finishing and coating of wood-fiber products like board games and books, the facility also holds environmental and management systems compliance, as well as a Forest Stewardship Council certification.

The SGP Partnership, a nonprofit commercial sustainability organization, certifies graphic communication companies that comply with both federal and local regulations in addition to conforming to specific criteria. This includes setting up a “sustainability team” that monitors SGP compliance while strategically reducing its environmental footprint and mitigating pollution.

Hasbro recycles around 82 percent of its non-hazardous waste, according to Hasbro’s 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility report. It also reports that it has cut its global carbon dioxide emissions by about 2,000 metric tons per year since 2008 – equivalent to over 4.4 million Mr. Potato Heads.

The Pawtucket-based toy and game maker saw a weak fourth quarter 2012, with profits dipping by 6.4 percent. Profits for the company fell about 12.8 percent in the full-year 2012 due to a “challenging holiday season,” Brian Goldner, Hasbro president and CEO, said in prepared remarks.
