PAWTUCKET – Hasbro Inc. placed first on Newsweek’s 2016 Green Rankings released this week.
The ranking assesses the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States on overall environmental performance. Woonsocket-based CVS Health Corp. ranked 16th and Providence-based Textron Inc. ranked 156th. Citizens Financial Group Inc., also in Providence, ranked 459th.
Other national companies with a local presence on the list include Amgen Inc. (49th), Verizon Communications Inc. (95th), CBRE Group Inc. (134th), Tiffany & Co. (154th), Bank of America Corp. (175th), Honeywell International Inc. (232nd) and General Growth Properties Inc. (334th).
Newsweek’s 2016 Green Rankings is based on research from Corporate Knights Capital and HIP Investor including data from Bloomberg’s Professional Service. Eight rules-based indicators, including combined energy, water, greenhouse gas and waste productivity, help assess and measure the environmental performance of the publicly traded companies.
Hasbro welcomed the news that it ranked first, but the toymaker’s CEO Brian Goldner said it will continue to work “to minimize the environmental footprint of our operations, products and packaging, and to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.”
“Our purpose is to make the world a better place for children and their families, and to us, a big part of that is taking care of the planet for future generations,” Goldner said in a statement. “While we’re proud to be ranked No. 1, we believe that every day is a chance to be better.”
Hasbro said its environmental sustainability efforts focus on three areas: reducing the environmental impacts of products and packaging, partnering with vendors to source and distribute Hasbro products in an environmentally conscious way, and minimizing the environmental footprint of operations. The company also engages employees, consumers and communities to promote a culture of environmental responsibility.
