The Hawthorn Medical Associates Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts has awarded $30,000 in grants to five local programs focused on women and children in need.
Four programs receiving $5,000 each are the Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County, the Women’s Center, the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts and the WCA of Southeastern Massachusetts.
The fifth program, the Foxboro-based Kennedy Donovan Center, which has centers in New Bedford, was awarded a $10,000 grant for general support by Hawthorn, $5,000 to be paid in 2015 and $5,000 in 2016. That program supports people with developmental delays, disabilities or family challenges.
“The need to empower women and families at risk in our region is greater than ever,” said James Gularek, CEO of Hawthorn Medical Associates. “Hawthorn recognizes the importance of supporting worthwhile programs that impact lives in the communities we serve.”
In addition, a $5,000 pledge payment on a three-year grant was made by Hawthorn to Catholic Social Services’ Sister Rose House for its women’s shelter. The program offers a wide range of supportive services including assessment, job skills training, budgeting information and access to mental health and other needed services.
The availability of these grants is the result of the creation of a $500,000 endowment by Hawthorn Medical Associates at the Community Foundation. Founded in 1970 to provide care for patients in southeastern Massachusetts while bringing physician specialists and services to the community that were not available at the time, Hawthorn includes more than 135 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
