Hazeltine named to Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame

PROVIDENCE – Brown University professor emeritus Dean Barrett Hazeltine has been inducted into the Rhode Island Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.
“Dr. Hazeltine is a rock star educator,” said Dennis Littky, co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning and the Met. “He gets that students learn best when what they’re taught is connected to the real world. That’s why he fits in so well with our Met culture.”
The induction was held at the Met’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship on June 14 at “Different by Design,” a brunch held in his honor. The event also featured campus tours, a student marketplace, a buffet-style brunch, and live music performed by students.
A Brown faculty member since 1959, Hazeltine teaches courses in management and engineering, including the widely popular Engineering 9, known as “Engin. 9.” A longtime supporter of the Met, Hazeltine volunteers his time to encourage and challenge high school students to create and design their own businesses at the center.
He also volunteers as a judge at the annual Met Business Plan Competition, which serves as the culmination of the school’s 60-hour entrepreneurship course.
Met entrepreneurs are developing their own startups, innovating new products and placing in the top tiers of national award competitions.
The event raised more than $30,000 to help support program expansion and technological upgrades.
