PROVIDENCE – With the enrollment deadline fast approaching, more people are signing up for health insurance through HealthSource RI, the state’s health benefits exchange.
As of Jan. 24, 79 percent of Year One customers in the individual market have renewed for 2015, with 75 percent paying the first month’s premium. With 20,283 renewed customers and 7,862 new customers, there has been a total of 28,145 enrollments.
Of that number, 25,728 have paid the first month’s premium, according to HealthSource RI. The 2014 total for individual enrollments was 25,288.
(A week earlier, the exchange had reported that a total of 28,789 individuals were enrolled; however, individuals who selected a plan but did not pay by their selected coverage effective date (the most recent being Jan. 23) were canceled, resulting in a decline in the overall number of enrollees.)

Twenty plans are available on the individual market for 2015; last year, 12 were offered.
The open enrollment period for individuals ends Feb. 15. New and renewing customers who enroll by that date and pay their first month’s premium by Feb. 23 will have coverage that begins March 1.
HealthSource RI also provided data on the type of plans individuals are selecting, with 61 percent of renewing individuals selecting a different plan for 2015, 38 percent of renewing individuals selecting a plan with a different carrier and 81 percent of renewing customers selecting a plan in the same metal level, gold, silver or bronze.
Most participants are choosing Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island plans at 51 percent, followed by Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island at 46 percent and UnitedHealthcare of New England at 3 percent.
Last year, 97 percent of customers chose Blue Cross, and 3 percent, Neighborhood Health. UnitedHealthcare was not offered in 2014.
As of Jan. 24, 1,929 small employer accounts were created, with 553 small employer applications completed. Out of the small employer applications, 437 have been paid, representing 3,184 covered lives (these numbers are not included in the total for the individual market).
Data released on Jan. 17 regarding small employer accounts were slightly inflated due to a reporting error.
From Nov. 7 through Jan. 24, HealthSource RI received 13,738 walk-ins at its Providence and Warwick offices, and its website, healthsourceri.com received 522,247 page views.
