Highlander school gets grant for school paper

PROVIDENCE – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corporation has awarded a community grant to the Highlander Charter School to help buy supplies to establish a school newspaper.
The foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP in Boston.
Under the supervision of Soljane Quiles, a Highlander Charter School teacher and grant applicant, the middle school students will work in teams to research and write articles and lay out the publication for print, reinforcing the 21st-century skills they need to compete in a global market.
Al Wallis, executive director of the foundation, said the support is important because the program promotes analytical thinking, strong writing and research abilities and a sense of teamwork. •
