NEWPORT – Martina Hingis has been named Global Ambassador for the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Hingis was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013 in recognition of her career highlighted by 17 major titles in singles and doubles.

As the first in this new role, Hingis will continue the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s efforts to preserve and promote the history of tennis and to educate and engage the global tennis community, the organization said.

“The International Tennis Hall of Fame is a special place,” Hingis said in a statement. “When you walk through the museum there, it’s awe-inspiring to see all the great champions and memorable moments that our sport has delivered. I was honored, humbled and inspired during the time I spent there for my induction. That said, I know there are many tennis fans who may not be able to make the trip to Newport, and so I’m thrilled to be working with the Hall of Fame to bring the organization’s mission and message out to fans around the world in a new way.”

Hingis is one of 242 people from 21 nations who have been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the highest honor in the sport of tennis. Since Hingis was inducted, she has returned to a busy competition schedule in doubles on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour, adding two additional major titles to her resume with victories in mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2014 and the Australian Open in 2015. She is currently part of the world No. 1 ranked doubles team, partnered with Sania Mirza.

Said International Tennis Hall of Fame CEO Todd Martin, “Martina is a tremendous ambassador for our sport in so many ways. She has achieved success at the highest level and has been part of great moments in the sport’s history. She is highly engaged with tennis fans worldwide. Through our museum and programs, the Hall of Fame works every day to preserve and promote our sport’s inspiring history. We are excited to have Martina take on this new role to help bring that work out into the global tennis community through her participation in special events and our outreach programs.”

In her new role, Hingis will help to promote activities at tennis events around the world on behalf of the Hall of Fame, including events in China and Singapore later this year. She will also make a trip to Newport in July to visit the Hall of Fame and tour the new museum, which opened in May after a complete renovation.

Hingis and additional Hall of Famers will be featured in a new brand campaign for the Hall of Fame, focused on showcasing the history of the sport through the life stories of the Hall of Famers, set to run in digital, print and social media, in the year ahead. The first print ads featuring Hingis began running this month and the campaign will continue to be built out in the coming months.
